On Daesangs, ROTY, and Korean Award Shows

As much as I love to focus on the music, we all know awards  matter, especially to the artists. No matter how many fans you have, or how many tours you sell, winning awards, specifically grand ones, is pretty important to every idol.

With SEVENTEEN releasing an awesome album, following the great EP: "You Made My Dawn" they delivered earlier this year, and after seeing so many fights on who deserves to be "Rookie of the Year" : TXT or ATEEZ??? X1 or AB6IX? I wanted to voice my opinion as well as explain some facts about these shows.

The fact is, Korean award shows are trash!!! Let me elaborate.
They are more of a popularity contest rather than a ceremony that awards those who produced the best works in music.
For example, MAMA which is arguably the biggest and most famous show, has these criteria when it comes to handing Daesangs:
( Daesang means "grand prize", they're the most important awards, like record of the year and album of the year)
Division
Online Voting
MAMA Professional Panel
(Local + Foreign)
Music Sales
Record Sales
Artist of the Year Award Category by Artist*
20%
30%
30%
20%
Song of the Year Award Category by Genre**

40%

10%
Album of the Year

60%

As you can see in the table, sales play a major role in determining whether an artist is to win the trophy or not, it doesn't matter if the album you made is an exceptional piece of art, if it doesn't sell extremely well, you ain't winning anything.
An idol or a group could produce a fairly mediocre record, but if they have a huge fanbase that buys their albums like crazy, they're winning which is pretty messed up.
I mean you can include sales as a criterion, but having them determine the winner with a 60%  mark is just crazy!

Same goes for Song of The Year and Artist of the Year, but its even worse with the online voting. An idol could deliver a great album that sells quite well, but if they have a fanbase that isn't into voting, he will lose to another artist who has a more dedicated following.

This way of judging includes other trophies as well, like Rookie of The Year which is ridiculous and unfair!
Let's say two groups debuted this year, one belongs to a bigger company while the second belongs to a less known one. The first will obviously have a bigger fanbase during their first year due to the heavy promotions, thus resulting in them selling more records and having people vote for them. The second group could be insanely talented, but due to money being a problem, they can't showcase their talent to a larger audience causing them to lose awards.

I feel like award shows should be more about the music rather than sales and voting!

And it's frustrating to see so many talented groups and idols lose, and feel so much disappointment year after year; just because they didn't sell as many copies as another idol, or didn't have as much fans vote for them.

SEVENTEEN, GOT7 and so many other idols have expressed their wishes to win a Daesang, and since things aren't changing any time soon, if you think your favourite artist is worthy and deserves to be recognized, make sure you buy and stream their music as well as vote for them when its needed.

An Ode deserves at least a nom!!!
