The Old vs New BTS: Who's Better?

Sometimes it feels like a day isn't complete without seeing something on social media about "Dark  & Wild" being the superior BTS album, or how "Love Yourself: Her" is good, but it ain't no "Skool Luv Affair". Thousands of threads, polls, and blog posts have been  shared trying to prove that BTS' old music is way better, some debates ended in real, serious fights, and if you think this post is going to give you a definite and final answer to this question, then you've come to the wrong place.

What's interesting to me is that most people saying that BTS' old music is better were not fans of the group back in 2013/2014 when the stuff they claim to be superior was released, and what attracted them to the group was actually the new stuff they claim is inferior. Many would make the claim that they didn't know about them back then, but still, if you think about this point, it's pretty interesting.

BTS' older music was more hip hop focused. The rap trio were the main focus, even the main singer Jungkook rapped. They used rap and sometimes rock inspired sounds, and their entire discography tended to be darker and more mature.
With "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life", they adopted a brighter, more edm inspired vibe and it worked so well for them. Not only did "I NEED U" give them their first win, 2 years after their debut, but it also generated a more international interest in them.

Pt2 of the EP had some great songs, House of Cards, Butterfly, Run and more, they were different from what we were used to, but they were as good.

Wings was an amazing album! Music wise it was great,  and it gave each member the chance to truly showcase their talent due to each one having a solo song, and when they all came together as a group, they killed it. Title tracks usually aren't the ones people tend to choose as favourites, but till this day, I think "Blood,Sweat and Tears" is a near masterpiece. Musically with its rhythm, lyrics and rap, and artistically with it's symbolism. It's both a creative and smart song.

The 2017 EP, "Her"had some pretty good tunes, and "Tear" was a great album! And yes, if you compare "War of Hormones" to "Fake Love", they're super different, and everyone has a preference, but it doesn't mean one's quality is way better than the other.

BTS has found a sound that sells and is popular with the public, as well as a sound that still allows them to be who they are as artists.

I didn't love "Persona" as much I loved "Tear" or "Wings", for me these two are better than their latest release, but the BTS that wrote and produced "Wings" isn't the same BTS that did "Persona".
These artists are meant to change, they're meant to explore new sounds and try different stuff, sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's a miss.

I 100% prefer "Boy in Luv" to "Boy with Luv",  that being said, I prefer "Spring Day" to most song from their earlier EPs/albums.

The truth is, whatever artists do, there will always be some sort of criticism,
If they kept releasing albums similar to "Dark & Wild", people would criticize them for recycling the same sound, not evolving, not taking risks and not being innovative. When they tried new stuff, people labeled them generic.

I feel like people have the misconception that mainstream equals bad,and thus BTS using more current sounds means they're producing music of lesser quality, and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Personally, looking back at BTS' entire discography, I can say that some of their old stuff are definitely better than their newer music, while some new songs are definitely better than several older ones.

I feel like nostalgia plays a huge factor in this. Fans longing to a period they loved, or in this case, fans longing to a past they haven't experienced themselves creates this feeling that the old stuff was better.

Having a preference is ok, loving their older stuff more is ok, but deeming the new music as inferior is just ridiculous.

  • If you happen to be an ARMY, do you believe BTS older music is superior? do you like their newer sounds better? or do you love their discography as whole without preferences? Share your thoughts in the comments.
